If you’ve been injured at work in the Sandy Springs or metro Atlanta area, you may be wondering whether your employer’s workers’ compensation insurance will cover chiropractic treatment. The short answer is yes — Georgia law recognizes chiropractic care as a covered medical treatment under workers’ compensation.
But the process has specific rules you need to follow. Here’s what every injured Georgia worker should know.
Georgia Workers’ Comp and Chiropractic: The Basics
Under Georgia’s Workers’ Compensation Act (O.C.G.A. § 34-9-200), employers are required to provide medical treatment for work-related injuries. Chiropractic care is explicitly included as an authorized form of treatment, provided it is deemed reasonable and necessary for the injury.
This means if you suffer a back injury, neck injury, whiplash, or other musculoskeletal injury on the job, you have the right to receive chiropractic treatment covered by your employer’s workers’ comp insurance.
How to Get Chiropractic Care Through Workers’ Comp
Step 1: Report Your Injury Immediately
Georgia law requires you to report a work injury to your employer within 30 days. However, reporting immediately — ideally the same day — is strongly recommended. Delayed reporting is the number one reason workers’ comp claims get denied.
Tell your supervisor what happened, when it happened, and what parts of your body are affected. Get it in writing if possible.
Step 2: Understand the “Panel of Physicians”
Georgia uses a panel of physicians system. Your employer is required to post a list of at least six physicians (the “panel”) who are authorized to treat workers’ comp injuries. You have the right to choose any doctor from this panel for your initial treatment.
Important: If a chiropractor is on the panel, you can choose chiropractic care from day one. If no chiropractor is listed, you may still be referred to one by the panel physician you initially see.
Step 3: Get an Authorized Referral
If you start with a medical doctor on the panel and want to transition to chiropractic care, you can request a referral. Once the treating physician authorizes chiropractic treatment, it becomes a covered expense under your workers’ comp claim.
What Chiropractic Treatments Are Covered
Workers’ comp in Georgia covers chiropractic treatments that are medically necessary for your work injury, including:
- Spinal adjustments — realigning vertebrae displaced by the injury
- Rehabilitative exercises — strengthening muscles to support recovery
- Soft tissue therapy — reducing muscle spasm and scar tissue
- Diagnostic evaluation — X-rays and examination to assess injury severity
- Follow-up care — ongoing treatment until you reach maximum medical improvement (MMI)
